Lip Service: Why Raised Edges Are Your Screen's Best Friend

The glass slab aesthetic peaked around 2017, and the smartphone industry has been quietly apologizing for it ever since. For nearly a decade, phone makers chased the thinnest possible profile and the flattest possible face, treating the display as a window that should sit flush with the frame, uninterrupted by any hint of a border. The result was a device that looked stunning in renders and felt like a wet bar of soap in the hand. The raised edge, or lip, around the screen was dismissed as a relic of the chunky plastic era, a sign that a manufacturer had not yet figured out how to shave off those final fractions of a millimeter. That judgment was wrong, and the market has started to agree, though for reasons that have little to do with nostalgia.

A raised edge is the strip of material, usually aluminum or plastic, that sits slightly proud of the glass surface. On modern phones it is often barely perceptible, a subtle ridge that catches the light when the device is tilted. On rugged phones, it is a deliberate, almost aggressive bumper that can stand a full millimeter or more above the display. The difference between these two approaches is not just aesthetic preference. It is a fundamental disagreement about what a phone is for: a fragile object to be cradled carefully, or a tool that gets dropped, shoved into pockets with keys, and set down face-first on whatever surface happens to be available.

Most people who have owned a phone for more than a year have experienced the specific dread of picking up a device that has landed screen-down on a gritty sidewalk. The instinctive flip, the held breath, the inspection for that telltale spiderweb of cracks radiating from a point of impact. The raised edge does not eliminate that moment, but it dramatically reduces its frequency. When a phone falls flat on its face, the lip absorbs the initial contact. The glass never touches the ground. This is not a speculative benefit or a marketing claim; it is simple geometry. A screen that sits below the level of its surrounding frame cannot physically make contact with a flat surface, no matter how hard it lands.

The physics of a drop are worth considering in more detail, because the common assumption is that a lip only helps when the phone lands perfectly flat. In reality, the benefit extends to angled impacts as well. When a phone tumbles out of a hand and strikes the ground at an angle, the corner of the frame usually hits first. If that corner has a raised edge, the impact force spreads across the frame material, which is designed to deform slightly and absorb energy. If the corner is perfectly flush with the glass, the edge of the display takes the hit directly. That edge is the weakest point of any screen, the place where the glass is thinnest and most vulnerable to chipping.

This is not a theoretical concern. The most common repair claim across the industry is a cracked screen, and the majority of those cracks originate at the corners or along the edges, not in the center of the display. A phone that lands on its face on a flat floor with a raised edge will often escape with a scuffed bezel. The same phone, without that protection, is looking at a service center visit and a bill that can approach half the value of the device. The math is not complicated: a fraction of a millimeter of material, factored in at the design stage, saves an enormous amount of money and frustration down the line.

Yet the industry spent years treating that protection as a design flaw. The pressure came from reviewers and consumers who held phones at arm's length and declared that the bezels were too thick, the edges too pronounced, the screen not immersive enough. Manufacturers responded by carving away every bit of frame that could possibly be removed, until the glass met the metal in a seamless, flush junction. The result was beautiful and fragile. The Samsung Galaxy S8, released in 2017, was a milestone in this direction, with its curved edges and minimal bezels. It was also, by many accounts, one of the more slippery and breakable flagships of its era.

The uncomfortable truth is that the flush design was never really about durability or even usability. It was about the illusion of infinite screen. A phone with a raised edge always has a visible frame, a boundary that reminds the user that the display has an end. A flush design, particularly one with curved edges that wrap around the side of the device, creates the impression that the image is floating, unbounded by any physical constraint. That impression sells phones in a retail store. It does not survive contact with a pocket, a car dashboard, or a toddler's grabby hands.

Consider the case of a phone dropped face-down onto a rough surface like asphalt or a concrete driveway. The flush design has no defense whatsoever. The glass is the first and only point of contact, and it will scrape, scratch, and potentially crack under the abrasive force. The raised edge, by contrast, acts as a sacrificial buffer. It will get scuffed, gouged, and possibly dented, but it will do its job. Replacing a scratched frame is a matter of putting on a case or living with a cosmetic blemish. Replacing a scratched screen means removing the display assembly, which is a far more invasive and expensive procedure.

The case for the raised edge extends beyond drop protection into the realm of everyday use. A screen that sits flush with the frame offers no tactile guidance for the thumb. A person swiping from the edge of the display will frequently catch their finger on the transition between glass and metal, a small but persistent annoyance. A raised edge creates a defined boundary, a subtle ridge that the thumb can feel without looking. This may sound like a minor detail, but for anyone who uses gestures heavily, particularly on larger phones, it makes a tangible difference in comfort and precision.

There is also the question of screen protectors. The flush design era created a nightmare for anyone who wanted to add an extra layer of protection to their display. A flat, flush screen is easy enough to cover, but the curved edges that often accompany the flush aesthetic are nearly impossible to protect with a standard glass or film protector. The protector either fails to adhere along the curves, leaving an ugly air gap, or it covers the display but leaves the edges exposed. A raised edge, even a small one, gives the protector a clean, flat surface to adhere to, and it provides a mechanical stop that keeps the protector from peeling off over time.

The rugged phone market never abandoned the raised edge, and that is telling. Brands like CAT and Samsung's XCover line have always shipped devices with prominent lips around the display, and those phones are specifically marketed to people who drop their devices as a matter of routine. Construction workers, warehouse staff, field technicians, these are users who cannot afford a cracked screen on a Tuesday afternoon. They buy rugged phones not because they like the bulky aesthetic, but because the raised edge is one of the few design features that directly addresses the most common way a phone gets destroyed.

The interesting development is that the mainstream market has begun to drift back toward a version of this thinking. The iPhone 15 and 16 series, while not sporting a massive lip, have moved away from the sharp, flush edges of earlier models toward a slightly more rounded transition between glass and frame. The Pixel series has maintained a modest but perceptible ridge around the display. These are not full-throated endorsements of the raised edge, but they are acknowledgments that the extreme flush aesthetic created more problems than it solved.

This is the quiet return of a principle that was abandoned for the wrong reasons. The raised edge was not removed because it failed to protect screens. It was removed because it made phones look less futuristic. The trade was made knowingly: a marginal increase in fragility in exchange for a more striking first impression. That trade made sense for manufacturers who wanted to win benchmark comparisons and design awards, but it never made sense for the person who carries the phone for two or three years and has to live with the consequences of a single bad drop.

There is a reason that case manufacturers have always included a lip in their products. Even the thinnest, most minimal case on the market, the kind that adds almost no bulk to a device, typically has a small raised edge around the front. Case makers know that their primary job is not scratch protection or aesthetic enhancement; it is preventing the single most expensive repair a phone owner will ever face. They build the lip in because years of consumer data and return rates have told them that a screen that does not touch the table is a screen that does not crack.

The irony is that a person who buys a phone without a raised edge and then puts it in a case ends up with exactly the design they rejected. The case adds the lip that the phone itself lacks. The phone becomes thicker, heavier, and less elegant, which were the very reasons the consumer chose the flush design in the first place. The raised edge on the phone would have provided most of the drop protection without the bulk of a case, but the market trained consumers to expect a naked, flush device and then sold them a rubber band to fix the problem.

A small shift in perspective is required. The raised edge should not be viewed as a concession to ugliness or a leftover from an earlier era. It is a functional element, no different from the antenna bands, the speaker grilles, or the camera bump. It exists to do a job, and it does that job well. The camera bump, after all, is a protrusion that everyone has accepted because nobody wants a flat phone with a mediocre camera. The raised edge is the same kind of compromise, except instead of improving the photo quality, it improves the odds that the phone will survive its next meeting with gravity.

There are legitimate reasons to prefer a flush design. Some people find any ridge around the screen uncomfortable when swiping from the edge, particularly with full-screen gesture navigation. Others simply prefer the look of a seamless slab and are willing to accept the increased risk. Those preferences deserve respect. What deserves less respect is the pretense that the flush design is objectively better, a superior engineering solution rather than a stylistic choice with real costs attached. The next time a phone is praised for having no bezel at all, it is worth asking what was sacrificed to achieve that look. Usually, the answer is the very thing that stands between a glass surface and a hard floor.
